About the Role

Whether you’re talking about length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, amount or the brightness of light, the National Physical Laboratory sets the standards by which these things are all measured. It’s important work and why we’re always looking at how we can improve. As a Quality Specialist, you’ll offer specialist advice that will not only help increase revenue but enhance productivity and our services too.


We are the forefront of what we do, but that’s because we’re always innovating. You’ll help create the software and instrumentation changes which will impact on our productivity and services to help us grow. This will involve preparing and analysing quality assurance status reports, carrying out software coding, advising on technical quality assurance activities to support product / project deliver and undertaking specialist quality audits to ensure full compliance.  As a technical expert, you’ll also ensure your knowledge and skills are up-to-date with any quality-related developments and legislation. 

Key responsibilities
• Undertake expert quality assurance activities, in conjunction with other Quality Roles across NPL as well as QA, in support of service /product/project delivery.
• Develop and implement working methods in line with Technical Specialisation to promote efficient staff and facility utilisation.
• Participate in project teams to ensure conformance and make necessary process adjustments and develop cost effective processes for work that does not meet standards.
• Prepare and analyse quality assurance status reports as required.
• Undertake quality audits ensuring full compliance with standards set out in quality documentation.
• Develop knowledge, skills and experience associated with the area of specialism and stay up to date with developments and legislation.
• Responsible for taking reasonable duty of care for Health & Safety of themselves and of other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work and always follow direct instructions given with regards to Health & Safety.
About You

The ideal candidate have a background in Quality Assurance and will be technically-astute and able to translate complex information into evidence of assurance to NPL's management system or identify improvement opportunities. 

Typically, you will need a relevant degree and plenty of experience in research, engineering and implementing changes to software and scientific instrumentation for quality assurance purposes. Training and development will be given, of course.
