You will set the technical direction and approach to realise a Digital National Metrology Institute (NMI), supporting the adoption of a “cloud first” delivery model, improved IT infrastructure and optimised business operations.

You will work to integrate the information applications and programs across all areas of NPL, ensuring that the architecture aligns and fulfils the strategic and operational objectives of the business strategy to become a Digital NMI.

Working in collaboration across the business, this role will own the technical review and technical design authority, ensuring compliance and alignment to our digital modernisation strategy.

This role will assess technology requirements to improve our internal and customer facing digital services and drive efficiencies across the technology and digital landscape.

The role holder’s responsibilities include:

  • evaluations and recommendations on improving the current IT infrastructure
  • ·optimizing business operations, and setting the direction and approach for integrating information applications and programs
  • cataloguing, developing, coordinating, communicating, maintaining, and enforcing overall enterprise architecture models, representations, initiatives, capabilities, and components to adequately perform our business and technology activities
  • ·overseeing the sign off and implementation of new technology requests and architecture models through appropriate channels such as the Technical Design Authority
  • working with the Cyber Security team to ensure models enforce security by design, reduce security risks and articulate vulnerabilities
  • work closely with wider IT colleagues, facilitating knowledge transfer to improve others knowledge and skills for future organizational growth/capacity
  • define the enterprise principles to guide solution decisions for the enterprise
  • ensuring high standard methods & processes for compliance and data security architecture, such as data storage, metadata management, and change control
  • assessing, implementing and supporting the adoption of a buy and configure vs build strategy
  • working collaboratively across the organisation to achieve consensus on technology platforms used across internal operations, science delivery and externally facing products and services.
About You

Skills sought:

  • Togaf certification (or equivalent) and/or Professional Cloud Architect (or equivalent)
  • Referenceable, in depth experience and knowledge in IT, including business process design across multiple organisations and projects.
  • Proven ability to work with Enterprise Architecture frameworks
  • Mentoring of colleagues, encouraging the application of architectural expertise in all areas of IT
  • Thorough understanding of designing and constructing business processes, functions and organizational structures using appropriate tools/modelling languages
  • Understanding of ITIL v4
  • Significant knowledge of Microsoft Azure / AWS cloud architecture and integration technologies
  • Proven ability to define architecture roadmaps and associated strategies
  • Excellent communicator, verbal and written, able to explain complex issues to a variety of stakeholders, technical and non technical.
  • Excellent quality focus, ensuring appropriate documentation and knowledge sharing
  • Proven experience of architecture design analysis alongside strong business analysis skills and experience 
  • Ability to analyse project needs and determine resources needed to meet objectives and solve problems that will deliver services to multiple environments across the business.
