About the Role

NPL are seeking a Standards Manager to take a leadership role internally and externally to lead the UK, European and International representation of UK interests in quantum technology standards.  This is a particularly exciting time as the process of standards development in quantum is now rapidly gathering pace with the establishment of BSI standards committee. 

The role requires active leadership and collaboration with BSI on the establishment and direction of a standards committee whose responsibility will be the definition of both committee structure and technical documents within the four quantum hub areas.   

As well the key role external to NPL in managing standards development the role will support the activities of scientists within NPL in their specific standards work through provision of management, reporting and communication.  

About You

We are seeking a highly motivated individual experienced in standards development and the function of standards bodies. Although experience in a Quantum Technology related discipline is beneficial, it's not a mandatory requirement. 

The successful candidate will be:

  • Self-motivated, willing to take ownership and to do what needs to be done in support of NPL’s role within quantum standards and the work of NPL’s scientists in their standards development activities 
  • Comfortable in organising, chairing and leadership of standards meetings comprised of academics, industrialists and senior managers
  • Knowledgeable about standards organisations and their national affiliation 
  • Have a positive and engaged approach
The individual must be comfortable and capable of understanding scientific issues and management of standards devolvement.  This will require both scientific knowledge but also a thorough knowledge of standards bodies their interdependencies and process of proposal, agreement and preparation of technical documentation.

  Essential skills/experience:

  • Qualified to degree level in physics, electronic engineering or a related subject, perhaps with a relevant postgraduate qualification
  • Experience in working with standards bodies and development of standards
  • Significant experience in documentation associated with standards
  • Experience in preparation and submission of scientific standards
  • Strong team player who is also capable of working independently, taking responsibility for and ownership of part of a larger team effort
  • Excellent technical communication, both verbal and written
  • Positive attitude towards record-keeping, documentation and version control
  • Experience in development of standards for emerging
