About You

The Dimensional Metrology Group is a world leader in research and development of new techniques, best practice and novel instruments for dimensional measurement covering 1 to 3 dimensions over scales ranging from picometres to 10s of metres. The Group is looking to expand its activity and increase its impact in the realisation of the metre with a particular focus on applications in advanced and high-value manufacturing.

The multi-disciplinary role will involve realising novel concepts; taking them from initial ideas to demonstration of principle and to market in order underpin the SI and to maximise commercial impact to the UK. Activities can include calibration and verification services across the group. It is likely that the roles will extend to involvement in other projects including 3rd party (industrially) funded work as well as government or grant funded.

 

 

About the candidate

 

The successful candidate will have a first degree in physics, applied maths, electronis or a related engineering discipline, will be a self-motivated team player with a track record of practical, technical problem solving. We also welcome candidates with relevant industrial experience. 

 

The ideal candidate will have experience in some of the following:

 

  • Data analysis/Mathematical modelling

  • Software development (e.g. LabVIEW, MATLAB, SolidWorks)

  • Image processing

  • Design of experiment

  • Understanding sources of uncertainty in the measurement of material properties

  • Scientific software development (e.g. LabVIEW, MATLAB, CUDA, C/C++)

  • Other desirable skills are:

 

  • Relevant industrial experience especially with industrial interfacing, process control and/or sensor integration

  • Practical laboratory experience

  • Electronics knowledge and/or experience (design, build, test)

  • Knowledge/practical experience with optics and lasers

  • Knowledge of quality standards (e.g. ISO9001, ISO17025)

Experience in metrology is not required (although desirable). An appetite to support the broader team in a wider spectrum of testing and research is essential.
