NPL is looking for a full-time Higher Research Engineer in Teddington, and the role comes with an attractive salary and benefits package. As a specialist higher research scientist, you'll use this Research Engineer position to take NPL's research to the next level. Your work will have a real impact on our business and the UK as a whole.


  • Sharing your expertise and knowledge so that we all benefit, mentoring those with less experience than you
  • Flagging commercial opportunities when they arise, as this is how new products and services are born
  • Developing partnerships to further NPL's capability – as an expert in your field, we'll seek your technical support for bids 
  • Acting as an ambassador for NPL's work externally and promoting what we do
About You

Software Engineer

NPL is seeking to strengthen its software expertise within the three Electromagnetic groups. These groups work on a wide range of projects varying from the realisation of the fundamental electrical units through to optical and wireless communication. These projects have an emphasis on supporting the UK Government’s priorities of improving quality of life, accelerating research and innovation, and enabling trade.

To apply for this positions, you will require a software related degree or equivalent experience.  Ideally, you will be an expert in your field with significant experience in some or all of the following:

  • Instrument interfacing / control
  • System integration (Ethernet, USB, cloud)
  • Software development and quality
  • Desirable skillset:
    • Computer vision/Image processing
    • ROS, Linux, Labview
    • Blender, Unity
    • Electromagnetic  Modelling

Staff and project management experience would also be valuable as you may be leading a team in planning and delivering complex research projects from conception to fruition.
