About the Role

NPL’s Electromagnetic and Electrochemical Technologies Group delivers world-leading measurement capability crucial to technology advancement in UK Industry. We work with the aerospace, automotive, energy and electronics sectors, in particular supporting the UK’s net zero agenda. Our multi-disciplinary research and measurement addresses industry’s needs across the product lifecycle, from supporting research into innovative materials and new technologies to inspection, reliability and measurement of electronic components and systems in real-life conditions.

The Electromagnetic Groups employ around 60 scientists and engineers working on a wide range of electromagnetic applications from remote sensing to the realising UK’s primary electrical measurement standards. We are seeking to recruit a single individual to cover both Laboratory  roles for the electromagnetics area. The expected split of these two duties is expected to be 60% Laboratory Manager and 40% Quality Lead.
About You

We have ambitious plans for the future and this role is intended to work alongside the managers, scientists, engineers and central support functions to ensure that our future plans are supported by robust procedures and excellent facilities that meet our needs both now and in the future. A technical degree would be advantageous as you’ll be having high-level conversations with scientists and engineers who’ll expect you to understand their needs.

Your role will require you to work in both an office and laboratory environment, at the Teddington site.

Laboratory Manager:

As Laboratory Manager you will act on behalf of the team to ensure that our laboratories and associated assets are fit for purpose and well maintained, our procedures and activities are compliant and our people are provided with the appropriate guidance and support to operate safely and securely to create long-term strategic value for NPL.

Key Skills and Attributes

  • Operational leadership experience within a laboratory environment.
  • Skilful at working cross-functionally with teams such as H&S, Quality Assurance, facilities, maintenance, security and logistics.
  • Previous experience of health and safety leadership including signing off risk and COSHH assessments and knowledge of IOSH.
  • Quality leadership including assuring compliance to statutory requirements; having led internal audits, investigated incidents, established root causes.
  • Project management skills to organise and prioritise workload across multiple activities including assessment of priority resource requirements.
  • Demonstratable experience of running continuous improvement to meet new efficiency, environmental and commercial targets from management.
  • An effective listener and communicator who motivates and influences in a positive way.
  • Have the confidence to challenge the status quo when required.

Quality Lead

The successful candidate will oversee the quality management across the Electromagnetic Groups and ensure adherence to the NPL’s quality management system.

Key responsibilities:

  • Be the local source and first point of contact for Quality Control (QC) best practice.
  • Work closely with other quality/compliance roles across the NPL, including the Quality Assurance team, Group Leaders, the Project Management Office and Science teams to ensure rollout of best practice within the Electromagnetic Groups and that all activities and outputs are fully compliant with NPL’s evolving quality management system.
  • Provide training as required and share knowledge and best practice across NPL as a leading member of the Quality Lead community.       
  • Locally managing the ISO 17025 laboratory accreditation including organisation of both internal and UKAS audits
