About the Role

The BioMetrology group at NPL, is a multidisciplinary team of biologists, chemists and physicists developing methods and standards to measure biological systems and processes, from the molecular to the multicellular level. Our research responds to the challenges of reproducibility, traceability, and comparability in biological R&D, to address key national and global priorities including drug and antimicrobial discovery, cell and gene therapies, regenerative medicine, and synthetic biology.

As a Research Scientist you will contribute to laboratory-based work, including equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, across a variety of different projects, ensuring timely delivery of contracted research in collaboration with industry and academia. As part of the team, you will use NPL’s state-of-the-art facilities in transmission electron microscopy for quantitative imaging of a range of biological systems from peptides and proteins to cells and tissues.

We are now working in a hybrid way, with a mix of remote and office working. About You

With a degree in Physics, Biology or Chemistry, you have a solid background in high-resolution microscopy (electron microscopy and/or optical/fluorescence microscopy), with skills in the preparation and analysis of biological samples. Previous experience in image analysis techniques are desirable. Other advantageous skills include image processing, data analysis and machine learning.

You should have experience in planning and operating established and innovative research methods, following standard operation procedures as well as health and safety regulations. Excellent communication skills and a customer focused attitude are expected to complement your technical expertise.
