About the Role

NPL is rapidly expanding its battery metrology portfolio and has a number of  vacancies for research scientists and engineers across a variety of levels, to join the Electrochemistry Group.

NPL’s Electrochemistry Group is a world-class research team delivering cutting-edge metrology to tackle a range of electrochemistry challenges, from corrosion and sensors to supporting the development and deployment of batteries and hydrogen. The work on batteries is centred on the development of advanced diagnostic techniques and standard test methods for characterisation of high energy density batteries, to support improvements in their performance, lifetime and safety.

We are seeking researchers and engineers with experience of battery technologies in both academic and industrial settings to join the team. Experience of one or more of the following is required:

  • Cell fabrication and testing
  • Materials characterisation
  • Module/pack testing
  • Electrical engineering
  • Battery thermal management

We are also interested in candidates with experience of testing the performance of new cathode materials for Li-ion batteries.

Working closely with our partners in academia and industry, you will participate in collaborative research projects at the cutting edge of the field, supported by the UK Faraday Battery Challenge and the European Commission. You will also play a key role in building internal collaborations within NPL, developing in situ diagnostic techniques with world-leading scientists from other disciplines, including temperature measurement, surface analysis, electromagnetic characterisation, dimensional measurement, acoustics, modelling and data management.

The initial focus of the research will be on Li-ion battery technologies for automotive applications but going forward there will also be opportunities to work on emerging technologies such as Na-ion, solid-state batteries and other next generation energy storage technologies for a range of applications.

We are now working in a hybrid way, with a mix of remote and office working. We strive to offer a great work life balance - if you are looking for part time or flexible options, we will try to make this work where business possible. This will be dependent on the kind of role you do and part of the business you work in.
About You
About You

Adaptability, an enquiring mind, and an enthusiasm for exploring new directions will be key attributes. Good presentation skills and an eagerness to promote your work are essential.

A PhD in battery research or a related field (e.g. Na-ion batteries or solid-state batteries) would be advantageous, but candidates with the equivalent industrial experience are also encouraged.

Candidates with experience in any of the following will be considered:

  • Hands-on skills for coin cell and single-layer pouch cell fabrication in dry room or glove box
  • Understanding of cell design and state-of-the-art materials in Li-ion cells
  • Experience with test activities for commercial cell performance assessment, abuse testing and diagnostics, including failure mode and root cause analysis
  • Experience with test equipment (e.g. MACCOR, Arbin, Chroma or AVL) including battery fixture design, electrical connection components/layouts and test procedures
  • Cell post mortem analysis
  • Automotive/grid scale energy storage experience
  • Characterisation of energy storage materials using XRD, TEM, EQCM, gas analysis or neutron/X-ray beamline facilities
  • Familiarity with thermal/CFD/mechanical modelling at cell, module and pack scale (ANSYS, ABAQUS or similar)
  • Working knowledge of BMS development
  • Experience with MATLAB, Simulink, Python or machine learning algorithms
Please note:  Applications will be reviewed, and interviews conducted throughout the duration of this advert therefore we may at any time bring the closing date forward.  We encourage all interested applicants to apply as soon as practical.
