About the Role
 We have an exciting opportunity for a measurement engineer or scientist to join NPL’s Measurement Services team within our Dimensional Metrology Group.  

The Dimensional Metrology Group is a world leader in delivering dimensional measurements, together with research and development of new techniques and novel instruments.  We focus on the measurement of 'length' – including distance, displacement, position, dimensions, size, area, volume and surface texture – over length scales from picometres to hundreds of metres.  We support a wide range of industrial and research sectors in conforming to precise dimensional requirements by providing the fundamental length measurement infrastructure for the UK, ‘realising’ the metre, and disseminating the length scale to users across the UK and beyond.

This is a hands-on role based in our Teddington laboratories.  You’ll join our experienced and friendly team of engineering measurement professionals and be expected to carry out measurement and calibration services for a range of customers.  Responsibilities will include operating measurement equipment, reporting results and completing associated paperwork to meet the needs of our quality system.  Depending on your capability and performance there may be opportunities to take on additional responsibilities for equipment maintenance, equipment upgrade/development, and data checking/approval.  No prior experience of using NPL’s equipment is necessary; all required training and support will be provided.
We are now working in a hybrid way,with a mix of remote and office working. About You
The responsibilities of this position can be tailored to suit a range of experience levels, from those with little background in this type of work through to highly-experienced Measurement Engineering professionals.  The levels of training, support, zone (pay grade) and salary will be matched to your level of experience and capability.
We’re seeking an engineer or scientist with the following capabilities:
  • Some prior experience of working in a laboratory or engineering environment.
  • Good hands-on practical skills.
  • The ability to work to procedures, and to record and check numerical test results.
  • Good attention to detail and an understanding of the importance of Quality Assurance.
  • The ability to work alone for periods whilst operating equipment, but also to work well and get along with others in a team.
  • Good working levels of maths and English (spoken & written)
  • Computer literacy (routine use of Microsoft Office for e-mails, Word, Excel, etc.
  • A willingness to carry out routine measurement tasks.
Any of the following additional capabilities would also be of interest, but candidates without any of this experience are still encouraged to apply:
  • Experience in engineering measurement services or equipment calibration services, and familiarity with engineering measurement equipment.
  • Experience of working in a UKAS-accredited laboratory.
  • Experience of data analysis.
  • Experience of writing work procedures and/or laboratory risk assessments.
  • Experience of liaising with customers, including creating quotations for work.
  • Experience of scheduling work tasks and/or equipment maintenance.
