About the Role

Put simply, we set the standards by which everything is measured. In doing so, the National Physical Laboratory is helping to combat issues on a global scale such as climate change, curing diseases and the development of cutting-edge communications technology. Despite the cutting-edge nature of our work, we can never rest on our laurels. As our Head of Finance Strategy and Planning, you’ll lead and deliver our financial strategy to become even more competitive and commercial as we work towards achieving our goals. 

We’re working to broaden our commercial horizons. Yet to do so, we need to ensure our decisions are backed by accurate financial modelling and planning – that will allow us to succeed.. You’ll also provide strategic leadership, working with stakeholders and and other finance leaders to relay your proposals – whilst helping them understand the business drivers – as well as checking the information provided is suitable to their needs. You will be leading and coaching a team who deliver the budgeting and 5 year planning and working closely with the CFO providing analysis and information ahead of board meetings.

We are now working in a hybrid way, with a mix of remote and office working. About You

A qualified accountant (ACA, CIMA), you’re an inspirational leader with extensive strategic planning experience. Highly analytical and numerate, your financial know-how is backed by astute commercial-awareness. We’re looking for someone who has the expertise to translate our ambitious plans into financial deliverables and you’ve got the experience to do it. Beyond that, we’re looking for someone who’ll thrive in an environment like ours.

Essential criteria

  • A proven track record as an inspirational leader; coaching and developing staff; challenging and supporting colleagues to deliver the mission and vision of an organisation with comparable scale and complex funding landscape
  • Established experience of strategic planning from concept to embedding
  • Experience of leading the financial elements of complex bid submissions, including tax and structuring considerations
  • Understanding and experience of ensuring the financial success of large programmes to deliver significant benefits
  • Strong ability in preparing materials for and reporting to the company Board
  • Ability to evidence analytical thinking and assimilate complex information to underpin decisions quickly
  • Excellent senior stakeholder engagement and relationship building with proven influencing skills
  • Sound Excel skills including financial modelling and consolidation
  • Demonstrates gravitas and credibility
  • Qualified accountant (preferably ACA or CIMA)

Desired criteria 

  • Experience of spin outs or setting up new entities
  • Experience of working with Microsoft D365
  • Experience working in, or in partnership with, research and technology organisations, or Higher Education institutions
