About the Role
The Environment Department undertakes research in support of industry, academia and policy making and is organised into 4 groups - Earth Observation, Climate & Optical. Emissions & Atmospheric Metrology. Gas & Particle Metrology. Nuclear Metrology.

The Environment Department develops, maintains and applies a UK national science, metrology and measurement capability for two main aims; to enable the balance of energy sources, energy vectors and the adoption of energy efficiency to fulfil the needs of human society and to assure the long term healthy interaction of humanity with the earth environment.

This is achieved by undertaking cutting edge engineering and scientific work in areas ranging from fundamental nuclear metrology to earth observation satellite missions and from the development of atmospheric monitoring standards to research supporting the hydrogen economy.

The Lead or Principle Engineer will help deliver the Environment Departments wide portfolio of projects and the maintenance and development of the scientific facilities and capability within the departments four groups.

About You
To lead and inspire a team of this calibre, not only will you need to be a world-class expert in your field, you’ll also need experience of motivating a team to do better. Inspirational, influential and a great relationship builder, you have the commercial awareness to help us achieve our ambitions.
You'll be taking cutting edge scientific developments and applying creative engineering solutions to enable the realisation of higher TRL solutions/products. Experience transforming engineering practices and behaviours in a large, preferably scientific or high technology, organisation will be needed along with the selection and application of design codes, standards and industrial regulations to equipment and facilities/processes.
To be successful you'll have a track record of working within and leading multi-disciplinary teams and possess high standards with respect to delivering with quality and to time and budget.
You'll also have:
  • Experience in leading the technical delivery of complex scientific or engineering projects
  • Previous experience in the writing, review and approval of functional and technical specifications
  • The ability to apply technical risk management during projects and/or product development
  • Experience in leading HAZOP studies and staged/gated design review processes
  • Experience in the implementation, development and improvement of engineering and management processes and standards
  • Degree qualified in a scientific or engineering disciple
  • Chartered engineer status (or equivalent & demonstrable experience)
