About the Role
 NPL are implementing a Digital Modernisation transformation programme with the following 5 key strategic themes:

Accountable for a centralised capability within NPL providing reporting, data governance, insight, analytics, library and information services. Responsible for the information architecture and data model, setting the data strategy and data governance frameworks.

Areas of focus:

  • Work with the Executive team, Heads of Department, Managers and Data Owners to shape and provide business intelligence solutions for use across the business up to and including the Executive and NPLML External Board.
  • Define strategy for Data and Analytics, Business Intelligence and Information Management.
  • Accountability for the Business Intelligence, Analytics platforms and data layers enabling the accurate and timely delivery of information to multiple business stakeholders.
  • Lead the team ensuring cohesion across the BI Analysts, Data Engineers and Information Management functions.
  • Manage and advise on publishing and managing research outputs, the curation and dissemination of research data, adhering to the principles of Open Access.
  • Accountability for delivery of a high-quality cost-effective library and information service to the business.
  • Champion the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles of data processing across NPL operations and functions.
  • Provide support and training to staff on a range of data issues such as working with special category data, anonymisation techniques, data linking, sharing, and the storing and handling of data and associated metadata.
  • Working collaboratively with IT and NPL scientists and partners to standardise and support processes for data capture, retention and curation.
  • Promote of digital solutions based upon cloud technologies.
  • Build extensive network across external partners and industry thought leaders. Understands the art of the possible and technical trends.


About You
  • Experience leading a successful Business Intelligence team across a complex and wide-ranging set of business functions for medium/large enterprise.
  • You will be educated to degree level, with a professional qualification in Information Management or similar with practical experience of maintaining and quality assuring databases and of associated technical concepts and practices.
  • Fully conversant with current research data management practices, and the information governance landscape, providing subject matter expertise in the definition and implementation of information management frameworks, policies and processes; providing advice on all aspects of research data management.
  • Good communication, presentation and advocacy skills are also essential.
  • Extensive stakeholder management at Director/C-level.
  • Excellent leadership skills.
  • Strong awareness of operational, organisational and people challenges as well as reporting and data capabilities.
  • Project Management experience including planning, resource allocation and prioritisation.
  • Good knowledge of IT systems and infrastructure. Power BI experience would be desirable.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
