About You

There is an opportunity for a highly motivated technical lead to join the National Physical Laboratory's (NPL) Time & Frequency department to work on time and frequency distribution. In addition to being at the forefront of developing the next generation of atomic clocks, NPL is the only precision timing centre in the UK and fulfils a vital role by maintaining the national time scale, known as UTC(NPL).   The timing expertise within NPL is utilised across the UK to deliver solutions across many industries, and is integral to public life and services.  NPL is also part of many thought leading communities and leaders across different industries.

The successful candidate will have a PhD and/or equivalent experience in physics, networking or programming.  Experience or knowledge of: software development best practices, network design, system engineering, testing best practice in software or hardware and commercial service delivery.  Having experience of leading projects and teams, including coordinating internal and external collaborative team work would be highly valuable.  In addition programming experience for devices and modelling algorithms, predominantly using Python, LabView or MATLAB, would be of use within the role.

They will join a team of multi-disciplined engineers and scientists to provide technical leadership on projects and initiatives that guide the next generation of technologies, all the way from networking to navigation, revolving around time dissemination.  We are looking for enthusiastic and driven individuals to build the culture to deliver to our customers and evolve NPL to operate at the highest standards in our operation.

Main responsibilities for the role will include:

  • Providing direction and strategy around time and frequency solutions, network implementation, high availability network design, installation and maintenance.
  • Lead engineers and scientists to deliver projects to time, cost and quality with focus on the customer in accordance with the NPL quality standards
  • Orchestrate solution finding, and focus on continuous improvement to services and processes, driving NPL's vision and enhancing their brand.
