About the Role

Through our vital research, the National Physical Laboratory is helping support scientific and commercial innovations, international trade, environmental protection and health and wellbeing.

NPL has ambitious targets for the organisation and are delivering a portfolio of change programmes and projects. We have set up the Transformation programme office to support this ongoing strategic change activity and are looking for Portfolio Office Manager to join the team and establish routine practices and further implement governance and reporting structures.     

You will be a key member of the transformation and change team with the responsibility to maintain major change governance in programmes and projects.  You will assure projects and programmes are delivering to the agreed standards and establish a benefit reporting system with the help of the delivery staff. This is an exciting opportunity to apply best practice to help coordinate the delivery across the portfolio as well as making links to other projects in the programme.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage the framework in which the Portfolio Office operates across all parts of project/programme management including Benefits management, Risk and Issue management, Scheduling and planning, governance, financial controls

  • Provide leadership of the Portfolio Office team ensuring effective and efficient controls and reporting are in place.

  • Own and maintain project governance approaches, methods and standards for major internal change Projects

  • Provide input on an ongoing basis to change management processes and procedures

  • Line manage Project/Programme coordinators

  • Ensure that Management reporting is completed regularly and accurately

The role is a permanent and will suit someone with the experience of managing a portfolio/programme office or a project management office and who thrives in environments that depend on excellent stakeholder engagement.

About You
Experience and knowledge

  • Proven track record of managing a programme or project office for medium sized programmes or the ability to demonstrate the capability to do so

  • MSP awareness, certification is highly desirable

  • Experience in benefits reporting highly desirable

Skills and abilities

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Excellent communication skills

  • High quality, clear and concise writing style

  • Organised, self-motivated to produce high quality results

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Proficiency in Microsoft products including Teams, Sharepoint essential.
