About the Role

There is an opportunity for a motivated individual to join NPL’s Quantum Technologies Department to work in the Quantum Materials and Sensors group.

You’ll plan and deliver a number of technical activities to take our research to the next level. As we’re pushing boundaries all the time, we’ll expect you to acquire new knowledge to find solutions to advance our research. It’s your responsibility to share your learnings so that we all benefit, mentoring those with less experience than you. Equally, if commercial opportunities arise from your work, you’ll need to flag these – as this is how new products and services are born. The same can be said for developing partnerships to strengthen our capability. You’ll also act as an ambassador for our work externally and be willing to promote what we do. And, as an expert in your field, we’ll also seek your technical support for any bids we may be undertaking.

The candidate will contribute to a number of projects requiring application of a range of leading-edge research and measurement techniques. 

The role includes:

  •  Designing and performing experimental studies;
  •  Development and performing advanced SPM experiments;
  • Development of standardization procedures in the magnetism area;

It will also involve collaborative working :

  • Development of a circle of new industrial collaborations.
  • Working in close collaboration with a large European network;
  • Exploring existing and building up new collaborative networks in the international research community;

And could involve presentation of research results in peer-reviewed journals and at international conferences;

About You

A successful candidate should demonstrate experience and knowledge in the multidisciplinary research area, including:

  • Excellent knowledge of magnetic and electrical modes of scanning probe techniques;
  • Knowledge and experience in SQUID magnetisation measurements;
  • Knowledge of transport and local measurements of topologically-protected spin structures;
  • Significant experience in nanotechnology and nanofabrication;
  • Good level of programming and modelling skills (LabView, MatLab).

General requirements:

  • •             A PhD or relevant laboratory experience in physics or relevant disciplines;
  • •             Understanding and enthusiasm in fundamental and applied research;
  • •             Excellent problem-solving, with a record in innovative research;
  • •             Strong communication and presentation skills;
  • •             Ability to manage own time and to work as part of an interdisciplinary project team.
