About the Role

You’ll plan and deliver a number of technical activities to take our research to the next level. As we’re pushing boundaries all the time, we’ll expect you to acquire new knowledge to find solutions to advance our research. It’s your responsibility to share your learnings so that we all benefit, mentoring those with less experience than you. Equally, if commercial opportunities arise from your work, you’ll need to flag these – as this is how new products and services are born. The same can be said for developing partnerships to strengthen our capability. You’ll also act as an ambassador for our work externally and be willing to promote what we do. And, as an expert in your field, we’ll also seek your technical support for any bids we may be undertaking.

About You

There is an opportunity for a motivated individual to join NPL’s Quantum Technologies Department to work in the Quantum Materials and Sensors group.

The job will involve research and development and enhanced engineering of microwave resonator techniques for the non-contact measurement application of the unique electrical properties of a range of 2D materials.  Research and development work will also focus on the development of sensor modalities based on the properties of these materials. The candidate will also contribute to a number of commercially focused projects requiring the application of this leading-edge research and measurement techniques. 

The candidate should have a recent Ph.D. in a physics or electrical/electronic engineering subject, preferably in the condensed matter area. Experience in microwaves, graphene and 2D materials is  required. Recent experience with graphene printed circuits and related device implementation is desirable. Software skills should include MATLAB and/or LabView. The ability to problem-solve and propose appropriate solutions, along with an understanding of the underlying physical principles is also important.
