About the Role

You’ll plan and deliver a number of technical activities to take our research to the next level. As we’re pushing boundaries all the time, we’ll expect you to acquire new knowledge to find solutions to advance our research. It’s your responsibility to share your learnings so that we all benefit, mentoring those with less experience than you. Equally, if commercial opportunities arise from your work, you’ll need to flag these – as this is how new products and services are born. The same can be said for developing partnerships to strengthen our capability. You’ll also act as an ambassador for our work externally and be willing to promote what we do. And, as an expert in your field, we’ll also seek your technical support for any bids we may be undertaking.

About You

Permanent positions exist for scientists to work in the Ultrasound and Underwater Acoustics Group, specifically within the underwater acoustics area. NPL is world-leading in this area and has a suite of dedicated facilities – laboratory tanks, an acoustic pressure vessel and an open-water site. The successful candidate will join NPL at an exciting time of growth where there will be a great opportunity to maximise impact from high-quality science.

The main project areas are developing improved techniques for underwater acoustic measurement and calibration utilising NPL’s specialised laboratory facilities, and developing experimental techniques for ocean acoustic measurement. The successful candidates will play key roles in delivering NPL’s scientific work, including the delivery of measurement services and contributing to research and development projects, requiring a careful, methodical approach and attention to detail. The ideal candidates will have a graduate or post-graduate qualification in Physics or Acoustics or equivalent.

An aptitude for precise experimental work is essential, along with an understanding of the underlying physical principles, as well as the ability to problem solve and propose appropriate technical solutions. Some knowledge of acoustics, marine acoustic technology, and data analysis techniques would be beneficial, as would experience of with software packages such as Matlab and/or LabView. Strong personal motivation, the ability to interact successfully with colleagues, collaborators and customers, and an ability to work to deadlines within a team, are prerequisites for the roles. In addition, the successful candidates will have good communication skills, both verbal and written.
