About the Role

We have permanent positions for Research Scientists of varying levels of experience to work in the Ultrasound and Underwater Acoustics Group within the underwater acoustics area. We are looking for early career scientists, ideally with a graduate or post-graduate qualification in Physics or Acoustics or equivalent, and also those with greater than 10 years’ relevant experience.

NPL is world-leading in this area and has a suite of dedicated facilities – laboratory tanks, an acoustic pressure vessel and an open-water site. The successful candidates will join NPL at an exciting time of growth where there will be a great opportunity to maximise impact from high-quality science.

You will work on developing improved techniques for underwater acoustic measurement and calibration utilising NPL’s specialised laboratory facilities, and developing experimental techniques for ocean acoustic measurement. The successful candidates will play key roles in delivering NPL’s scientific work, including the delivery of measurement services and contributing to research and development projects, requiring a careful, methodical approach and attention to detail.

About You

The more senior position being recruited will already be well-established in the field with a demonstrated high scientific profile. They will play a key role in providing leadership for more junior scientists, as well as representing NPL nationally and internationally, will be able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in technical reports and proposals, and will present NPL’s work at conferences and in scientific papers. They will prepare project proposals, including costings, and act as technical lead for projects.

An aptitude for precise experimental work is essential for all roles, along with a good understanding of the underlying physical principles, as well as the ability to problem solve and propose appropriate technical solutions. In addition, it would be beneficial to have some knowledge of low-frequency acoustic pressure calibration techniques, acoustic modelling, and data analysis techniques, and marine environmental acoustics, as well as experience of software packages such as Matlab and/or LabView. The successful candidates will have good communication skills, both verbal and written.

Strong personal motivation, business awareness, good communication skills, the ability to interact and network with collaborators and future customers, and an ability to work to deadlines within a team are prerequisites for these challenging roles within our collaborative and motivated team.
