About the Role

Do you have the skills to be part of NPL’s role in giving the UK a world-leading position in the rapidly developing quantum technology market? We have several opportunities for talented scientists, engineers, electronics engineers, hardware and software engineers, and systems engineers to join our expanding team within NPL’s Time & Frequency Department.

We are looking to add to our team of multi-disciplined scientists and engineers to provide technical leadership on projects and initiatives that guide the next generation of technologies, all the way from new scientific innovations to providing test and evaluation services for industry. Much of this work will be undertaken in NPL’s brand new state of the art Advanced Quantum Metrology Laboratory (AQML) building. These roles offer the opportunity to work in collaboration with external organisations to develop this capability.

You’d be joining our Time & Frequency Department (www.npl.co.uk/time-frequency) at an exciting time. We have some of the most precise optical atomic clocks in the world which will one day re-define the second.  We are also developing compact atomic clocks for use in GPS-denied environments and are developing an engineering package that will enable an ultra-stable laser to withstand the rigours of a launch into space. We also provide timing services to financial institutions for share trading and are embarking on the development of a new time scale facility that will underpin our Critical National Infrastructure.
