We have several opportunities for talented scientists, engineers, electronics engineers, hardware and software engineers, and systems engineers to join our expanding team within NPL’s Quantum Technology Department.

You’d be joining NPL’s Quantum Technologies Department at a very exciting time - a
s electronic devices become smaller and smaller, quantum phenomena are more prominent enabling devices to harness quantum principles rather than traditional science. Quantum technologies develop this science to deliver breakthroughs in many areas, including increased information processing power, secure communications, high-precision measurement and sensing, and early diagnosis of diseases.

We are growing our team of multi-disciplined scientists and engineers to provide technical leadership on projects and initiatives that guide the next generation of technologies, all the way from new scientific innovations to providing test and evaluation services for industry.Much of this work will be located in NPL’s brand new state of the art Advanced Quantum Metrology Laboratory (AQML) building, equipped with the latest equipment following major recent investment. These roles offer the opportunity to work in collaboration with external organisations to develop this capability. We are looking for theoretical and experimental quantum scientists, electronics engineers with aptitude for scientific instrument and product development, and scientists with experience of instrument and device test and evaluation who are looking to build their careers in a diverse environment. A number of positions at a range of seniority level are available, and we are also interested in early career general scientists and engineers with the potential to develop a career supported by on the job training at NPL.

Specific areas of interest include one or more of:

  • Ion or cold atom trapping
  • Superconducting devices
  • Quantum photonics and communications
  • Solid state quantum systems 
  • Microwave amplifiers based on superconducting electronics.
  • Developing novel applications and test & evaluation facilities to support UK sovereign and industry needs
  • Quantum Computing
  • Qubit design and evaluation

    About You

    Requirements will include one or more of:

    • PhD, undergraduate degree or equivalent experience in physics, engineering, electronic engineering, systems engineering hardware development or software development
    • Work experience within an engineering, research and development, or software/hardware development environment
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing your time according to priorities
    • A rigorous approach to problem solving and ability to develop solutions to difficult problems
    • An inquisitive mind and willingness to interact dynamically within a team
    • Excellent written and verbal communication
    • Senior candidates - leadership ability both in terms of your technical knowledge and managing a small team of scientists and engineers. You will be expected have good customer facing skills and contribute to applying for funding and exhibiting leadership in their technical area and potentially staff management of a small team

    Advantageous skills include:

    • Development and operation of precision laser systems
    • Operation of cryogenic systems
    • Design and clean room fabrication of microelectronic devices
    • Design and implementation of optical networks (fibre and/or free space)
    • Programming experience: LabView, MatLab and Python are preferable
    • Electronics design and implementation
    • Experience in microwave and radio electronics
    • Systems engineering, hardware and software design
