As a Project Manager within our Science and Engineering Project Management Office, you’ll help facilitate change so that we continue to grow and do better. With new change projects being implemented all the time, you’ll take control of delivery plans – ensuring key stakeholders are engaged and prepared for the future. Overseeing every aspect (from facilitating meetings, to tracking risks, critical paths, milestones and dependencies, as well as monitoring and reporting on progress), you’ll see that your projects are delivered on time, on budget and to the highest standards. As an advocate of the use of best-practice project management methodologies, you will integrate new and improved approaches as and when appropriate.

The Project Management team are responsible for delivering all the major projects in Science and Engineering. We have an opportunity for a number of roles from PMO Administrator through to Senior Project Manager to join the team. NPL is going through an exciting time with new programmes and major projects in delivery or bid, including the Quantum Technology Programme (Link) which delivers increased information processing power, secures communication, aids high-precision navigation and earlier diagnosis of diseases through NPL's unique ability to test, validate and commercialise new technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the delivery of a project, programme or portfolio of projects to quality, time and cost and be responsible for the entire lifecycle of a project  

  • Build and own customer and stakeholder relationships, establishing what is important to the customer quickly, and ensuring requirements of the project are fully met

  • Proactively own and deliver the full lifecycle of a project which includes scope, timelines, finances, risk, quality and resources

  • Lead the project team to deliver, working in partnership with the Technical Lead(s) to ensure the development and delivery of the technical plan; gain a level of understanding of the technology involved

  • Apply common sense, sound judgement, smart management to add value and ensure successful project delivery

  • Have strategic awareness and the ability to step back and see the bigger picture in order to identify problems, risks and issues and come up with solutions

  • Lead and champion continuous improvement within the PM function 

You are an excellent communicator and influencer who has a successful track record in project management delivery. You have driven change yourself, and through others, collaborating and communicating, and able to take informed risks and decisions.

You will have a good understanding of different project management approaches (e.g. APM / Prince2 / Agile) and be able to provide support and mentoring to less experienced staff.

You are passionate and knowledgeable about Project Management and Science and Engineering and you naturally inspire others.

Using your excellent communication skills, you will keep the business informed on progress on the portfolio of projects being delivering.

You demonstrate all the core competencies required for the role at the 'most demanding' level: excellent stakeholder management, customer focus, people management, complex financial management, project management competencies (scope, scheduling, risk, project controls, etc), inspirational leadership.

It is desirable for you to have: -

  • a Scientific or Engineering background or qualification or have worked for a Science / Engineering / Technical organisation
  • a Professional Project Management Qualification (APM Charter or equivalent)

It is expected that you are proficient in all aspects of Microsoft OfficeTM, including MS Project.
