Equally, if commercial opportunities arise from your work, you’ll need to flag these – as this is how new products and services are born. The same can be said for developing partnerships to strengthen our capability. You’ll also act as an ambassador for our work externally and be willing to promote what we do. And, as an expert in your field, we’ll also seek your technical support for any bids we may be undertaking.

About You

Background information:

The Climate and Earth Observation group at NPL is a world leader in the theory, methods and practice of metrological traceability of Earth Observation (EO) instrumentation and their data products. CEO projects span the full life cycle of EO instrumentation traceability; from pre-flight calibration, in-orbit validation & sensor inter-operability, together with L1, L2 and derived product quality assurance.

Job description

We are looking for a person with interest in metrology and its practical implementation for quality of Ocean Colour Radiometry (OCR) products. The successful candidate will join the CEO team and be focused on developing the operational uncertainty budgets for ocean colour data services. This will include work on Fiducial Reference Measurements for Satellite Ocean Colour (FRM4SOC) in situ observations and extending this information to evaluate uncertainty budget for bio-optical measurements. 

The candidate will be encouraged to pursue continual professional development, membership of professional bodies (which will be subsidised) and will receive on-the-job training and support. In addition, the role involves attending and presenting at international conferences and leading and contributing to peer-reviewed publications in a range of sectors related to EO and remote sensing applications.

Typical Tasks:

  • Development of end-to end uncertainty budget for in situ OCR observations, including all environmental components for clear and complex waters.
  • Support implementation of uncertainty budget into community processor.
  • Develop practical guide for OCR end-to end uncertainty budget calculations.
  • Explore in research mode uncertainties for bio-optical measurements.
  • Work in a team with cooperation with other international partners.
  • Writing technical documentation and scientific publications.

 Person specification

  • Good understanding of Earth Observation Ocean Colour satellite products.
  • Good understanding of the metrological principles of uncertainty analysis.
  • Track record of uncertainty evaluation for in situ measurements.
  • Strong mathematical and scientific programming skills in Python or similar languages and use of cloud computing resources, such as JASMIN, Google Earth Engine
  • Good communication skills and be collaborative with other senior scientists and able to encourage and coach junior scientists/engineers.

In addition, we require:

  • Degree and MSc (or equivalent with several years’ experience) as a minimum in Physics, Maths or Earth Science.
  • Strong scientific and mathematical skills
  • Good communication skills (oral and written) 

You will also be expected to travel to international locations for conferences and to meet customers in the UK and abroad.
