About the Role

We are looking for a self-motivated Higher Scientist/Engineer to join the Thermophysical Properties area within the Advanced Engineering Materials group based in Teddington, which is home to some unique facilities that support UK industry. This full-time role comes with a generous salary and benefits package.

Research and measurement sit at the very core of our business here at NPL. This is your chance to become an important part of a team that focuses on the delivery of specialist Measurement Services for a wide range of industries. 

We are looking for someone who has an interest to develop a career in materials science with a special interest in thermal properties area. As a Higher Scientist / Engineer you'll be able to work independently and as part of a team. Your role will involve experimental work in the laboratory, data analysis, report writing and customer facing activities. You'll be able to solve problems in the laboratory as they arise and ensure timely delivery of research and commercial contracts for industrial customers. The successful candidate will understand operating under a quality system and have strong time management skills.

You will keep your technical knowledge up to date with the latest advances and take responsibility for completing your work to the highest quality standards, on time and within budget.

What you'll be doing:

  • Undertake measurements using thermal analysis methods (thermogravimetry, differential scanning analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermomechanical analysis, laser flash analysis, dilatometry).
  • Work independently as required, taking responsibility for set-up, calibrations, interpreting data and the repairs and maintenance of test equipment.
  • Sample preparation from a wide range of materials as needed. Attention to detail is essential.
  • Analyse experimental data including preparation of internal and external reports.
  • Training will be provided, but you will need to have a willingness to learn and develop through self-directed learning.
  • Develop standard procedures in the thermophysical properties area.
  • Work on both short- and long-term projects for internal and external customers.
  • Adhere to quality and health and safety protocols.
About You

  • A materials science degree or a similar degree. 
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of thermal analysis methods with the ability to rapidly learn new skills.
  • Experience in a laboratory environment is essential.
  • Ability to work independently and in a small team and work to tight deadlines.
  • Good interpersonal skills and a good team player with a positive attitude.
  • The ability to comprehend and explain relevance of results.
  • Understanding of quality systems.
