About the Role

Our world-leading Time & Frequency department are seeking a Senior Network Engineer with hands-on infrastructure and network design and implementation experience.

We are now working in a hybrid way, with a mix of remote and office working. This will be dependent on the kind of role you do and part of the business you work in. This role includes occasional evening and weekend work.
 

You will be joining our team at an exciting time - we maintain the UK’s National Time Scale, UTC (NPL), and are currently developing a new resilient Time Scale facility that will underpin our Critical National Infrastructure. This will address the risks associated with our dependency on global navigation satellite systems (such as GPS) that are are vulnerable to both natural and intentional interference.

Key responsibilities:

  • System infrastructure, and network design and commissioning (including various aspects e.g. installation, config management, patching, updates)
  • Development and maintenance of system operational procedures (including IT and security hygienic practices)
  • Effective communications with various stakeholders including programme management, external stakeholders, partners, suppliers
  • Creating and carrying out operational test procedures
  • Training maintenance team members and operators
  • Identify risks in a prioritised order along with implementing mitigating actions to reduce them

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have the following skills, experience, and qualifications:

Essential:
 
  • Experience with IT and network infrastructure (servers, switches, firewalls, WAN, LAN, routers, proxy servers), their management software, IT and security tooling setup, and applying policy-based processes
  • Experience in designing and commissioning systems aligned with recognised standards and certifications
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Exceptional time-management
  • An inquisitive approach to problem-solving and ability to develop concise solutions to difficult challenges
  • Experience with network monitoring software/tools
Highly desirable:
 
  • Experience in cyber security hygiene practices and cyber security technologies
  • Experience in virtualisation, containerisation, and databases technologies installation and management
  • Experience in satellite communication, optical fibre and GNSS-based systems
  • Experience of Microsoft Azure DevOps and Agile working practices
