  • About You

  • From high energy density batteries to hydrogen electrolysers and biomedical sensors, electrochemistry is the fundamental science that underpins many of the technologies driving us towards an environmentally conscious and prosperous future. Development of these critical technologies relies on high quality electrochemical measurements, generating accurate and reproducible data. As world leaders in electrochemical metrology (the science of electrochemical measurement) NPL’s Electrochemistry Group works with world-leading academic groups and industrial partners to support fundamental scientific developments and real-world technology challenges.

The initial focus of this role will be on quality control for rechargeable Li-ion cell manufacturing, but going forwards there will also be opportunities to work on emerging technologies such as Na-ion, solid-state batteries and other next generation energy storage technologies for a range of applications. The work on batteries is centred on the development of advanced diagnostic techniques and standard test methods for characterisation of high energy density batteries, to support improvements in their performance, lifetime, and safety.

The successful applicant will work with colleagues to help deliver projects focused on high energy density batteries. The work will include, but not be limited to, cell assembly (coin cells and pouch cells), cell testing, post-mortem/post-test analysis, data plotting and data curation, and development of best-practice guides on battery testing.  Addtionally, there will be opportunities to participate in external projects related to battery applications and to design bespoke measurement solutions for commercial and academic clients.

You will also play a key role in building internal collaborations within NPL, developing in situ diagnostic techniques with world-leading scientists from other disciplines, including temperature measurement, surface analysis, electromagnetic characterisation, dimensional measurement, acoustics, modelling and data management.

Adaptability, an enquiring mind, and an enthusiasm for exploring new directions will be key attributes. Good presentation skills and an eagerness to promote your work are essential.

    Essential Requirements
    • A PhD in battery research or a related field (e.g. Na-ion batteries or solid-state batteries) or a master’s degree in a relevant field + minimum five years of research or industrial experience in batteries.Data plotting and analysis using Origin or similar advanced graphing software, especially data analysis for batteries including cycling performance, galvanostatic curves, and differential analysis (dQ/dV, dV/dQ).
    • Experience working safely and to a high quality in a laboratory, in handling chemicals, and in the appropriate use of PPE
    •  Hands-on experience of coin cell and/or single-layer pouch cell assembly in a dry room or glove box.
    •  Understanding of cell design and state-of-the-art materials in Li-ion cells.
    • The ability to co-operate effectively within diverse project teams.
    • Conscientiousness and high attention to detail.
    • The ability to self-organise and work simultaneously on a range of activities.
    • Good written and verbal communication skills.
    • A growth mindset and a passion for professional and personal development.
    • Ability to work independently or as part of a team, as needed.
    • Resilience and the ability to work in a dynamic environment.
    • Willingness to travel within the UK, and occasionally internationally, when required.
    Advantageous Additional Skills and Experience
    • Experience with test activities for commercial cell performance assessment, abuse testing and diagnostics including failure mode and root cause analysis.
    • Experience with test equipment (e.g. MACCOR, Biologic, Keysight, Solartron) including battery fixture design, electrical connection components/layouts and test procedures.
    • Commercial battery testing (single cells to full systems) and data analysis.
    • Cell post-mortem/post-test analysis.
    • Experience with MATLAB, Python, R or similar.
    • Experience in databases and or data management software (SQL, Microsoft Access or similar).
