You will contribute to the delivery of several research projects, providing measurements and characterisation of photovoltaic devices as well as supporting the design, development and maintenance of advanced measurement systems. This includes assembling and testing new systems, writing code to control instruments and collect data, data analysis, modelling, presenting results and performing independent research. A mixture of on-the-job training, self-learning, and formal training will be provided. We offer a rare opportunity to pursue a career at the interface between academic research and industrial applications; you will have the chance to contribute at the highest level of international collaborative research and to deliver commercial services to customers large and small.
The successful candidate will require:
- A degree in physics or electronic/electrical engineering and a good knowledge of Electronics, Physics and Mathematics.
- (For Higher Scientists only): a PhD or equivalent experience related to Photovoltaics or Semiconductor device physics, preferably focusing on device characterisation.
- Knowledge of semiconductor physics and devices and related measurement techniques. Any level of experience with semiconductor materials and photovoltaics would be an advantage.
- Proficiency with MS Office applications.
- Programming skills (e.g. Python, MATLAB) are essential, experience with technical software such as LabVIEW would be an advantage.
- An ability to independently analyse data, distil results, observe trends and investigate anomalies.
- An aptitude and enthusiasm for practical problem solving, accuracy and care in measurements and experimental design are key.
- A professional attitude to health and safety, quality, reporting, delivering work to agreed timescales and representing NPL to external organisations.
- Good communication skills (both written and verbal) to liaise with colleagues and stakeholders to understand their requirements and discuss results.
- Excellent team working and relationship skills, but also an ability to work independently when needed, as well as an enthusiastic attitude to the work
