  • About the Role

  • NPL’s Electronic and Magnetic Materials Group delivers world-leading measurement capability crucial to technology advancement in the UK Industry. Advancements in electronic and magnetic materials are at the forefront of a range of developing industries and innovations, from the energy sectors to semiconductors, automotive and aerospace industries. Our work provides measurement science that supports scientific research and provides confidence in the adoption of new technologies and innovations.

We are recruiting a Scientist or Higher Scientist (depending on experience and qualifications) to work in our Semiconductor Materials and Devices team. The focus of this role is on Photovoltaic devices and applications, but work may also include semiconductor metrology related to other fields, such as power electronics, telecommunications, consumer electronics, and photonics. Our work in photovoltaics is unique and globally respected, providing critical support by developing and applying advanced measurement techniques and international standards.

The successful candidate will deliver a range of projects, from supporting the characterisation of new materials and technologies such as perovskite photovoltaics and indoor photovoltaics to improving the operational efficiency of large-scale solar farms. These include short-term projects providing companies and other laboratories with accurate, independent and trusted information as well as long-term projects supporting our mission as the UK’s highest point of reference in photovoltaic technologies.

  • About You

  • You will contribute to the delivery of several research projects, providing measurements and characterisation of photovoltaic devices as well as supporting the design, development and maintenance of advanced measurement systems. This includes assembling and testing new systems, writing code to control instruments and collect data, data analysis, modelling, presenting results and performing independent research. A mixture of on-the-job training, self-learning, and formal training will be provided. We offer a rare opportunity to pursue a career at the interface between academic research and industrial applications; you will have the chance to contribute at the highest level of international collaborative research and to deliver commercial services to customers large and small.

    The successful candidate will require:

    • A degree in physics or electronic/electrical engineering and a good knowledge of Electronics, Physics and Mathematics.
    • (For Higher Scientists only): a PhD or equivalent experience related to Photovoltaics or Semiconductor device physics, preferably focusing on device characterisation.
    • Knowledge of semiconductor physics and devices and related measurement techniques. Any level of experience with semiconductor materials and photovoltaics would be an advantage.
    • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
    • Programming skills (e.g. Python, MATLAB) are essential, experience with technical software such as LabVIEW would be an advantage.
    • An ability to independently analyse data, distil results, observe trends and investigate anomalies.
    • An aptitude and enthusiasm for practical problem solving, accuracy and care in measurements and experimental design are key.
    • A professional attitude to health and safety, quality, reporting, delivering work to agreed timescales and representing NPL to external organisations.
    • Good communication skills (both written and verbal) to liaise with colleagues and stakeholders to understand their requirements and discuss results.
    • Excellent team working and relationship skills, but also an ability to work independently when needed, as well as an enthusiastic attitude to the work
This is a lab based role and therefore the majority of time will be spent on site in Teddington, Middlesex

We actively recruit citizens of all backgrounds, but the nature of our work in specific departments means that nationality, residency and security requirements can be more tightly defined than others. You will be asked about this throughout the recruitment process. To work at NPL, you will need to obtain BPSS security clearance.

Please note:  Applications will be reviewed, and interviews conducted throughout the duration of this advert therefore we may at any time bring the closing date forward.  We encourage all interested applicants to apply as soon as practical.
