    UKTL is building leading edge Telecoms testing facilities to keep our telecommunications networks safe, accelerate the roll-out of new technologies, and grow our world leading telecoms sector to maintain resiliency and security.

    Successful candidates will join a state-of-the-art facility and be supporting the team conducting testing and research on the latest technologies and innovations in the industry. You will work alongside our infrastructure and Cybersecurity professionals to ensure that the UK’s world class Telecoms infrastructure grows in a resilient and secure manner underpinning growth in other industry sectors.

    Successful Applicants must be able to commute to the UKTL offices in Birmingham with the possibility of hybrid working. You will also need to be eligible for security clearance.

  • About You

  • You will have worked across a broad spectrum of IT and potentially Telecom architectures. Documenting and planning infrastructure will be your second nature ensuring that the systems can be simplified and are inherently secure. You will be curious and comfortable at learning new technologies and strive to ensure that your teams remain at the cutting edge.

    You will work across the technical Infrastructure, Networking and Telco Teams to ensure excellence in design and delivery. You will ensure that requirements from the Evaluation/Test Teams are captured and documented as the basis for the Enterprise and Telecoms supporting Architecture/capability build in the Data Centre. You will work end to end across the teams to ensure collaborative behaviours and ensure the efficient evolution of the architectures to maximise testing opportunities through a scalable architecture.

    Working alongside the Technical Programme Delivery team you will be responsible for coaching and developing a high performing team with well-defined development objectives working towards a well documented architecture with a long term roadmap and short, medium and long term plans with clear objectives and responsibilities.

    Key responsibilities

    • Development of an Enterprise Architecture Roadmap focussed on maximising Research and test evaluation outputs by ensuring that the data centre architecture is scalable for “Devices under Test”, test tools and testers.
    • Pursue opportunities to simplify the architecture while maintaining maximum flexibility and efficiency of investment.
    • Present evolution or changes to UKTL’s technology footprint in terms of business case and delivering business benefit.
    • Document the existing architecture and develop high and low level documented designs for the future evolution of the architecture. Ensure that plans are in place to identify sprint, monthly, quarterly and longer term deliverable targets and objectives.
    • Evolve the service desk function to capture technical demand across the whole of UKTL.
    • Ensure that a tight regimen of routine maintenance and regular patching is maintained to keep UKTL at current software builds and that a plan is in place to manage infrastructure as it approaches end of life.
    • Evaluate new technologies and innovations as they emerge and develop a business case to assess whether they should be incorporated.
    • Coach and develop the infrastructure, networking and telecom teams to create a unified approach to designing, building and maintaining the data centre.
    • Ensure that the Team Leaders set clear objectives and performance goals for every team member based on organisational values and support conversations with team members to address poor performance and motivate to reach and maintain high performance.
    • Reinforce adherence to a high quality, “secure by design” approach with reference to the Telecommunications.
    • Reinforce the high security posture of UKTL through approach to process and behaviours and awareness.
    • Ensure that Business Process Continuity Plans and Disaster Recovery Plans are in place and maintained.
    • Adopt an approach of continuous improvement clearly articulating the benefits of this approach for onward communication to customers.
    • Liaise with the relevant areas of NPL to ensure that any synergies and use of common services can be achieved

    Essential Skills and Experience

    • Essential a thorough and broad understanding of Enterprise Architectures in a high security environment.
    • Desirable a good understanding of 4G, 5G and fixed and mobile networks.
    • A systematic approach to architecture design to document “as is” and “to be” architectures presented as a roadmap with short, medium and long term plans.
    • A thorough understanding of virtualisation, containerisation and IP network design along with the associated switching fabric and firewalls.
    • A thorough understanding of the testing process to ensure quality outcomes.
    • Experience with writing Business Planning and Disaster Recovery plans.
    • Experience with continuous improvement of processes and systems.
    • Coaching and people management to motivate and create a high performing team while also ensuring that poor performance is managed and addressed.
