  • About the Role

  • Drive the Next Generation of Quantum Connectivity

Join the team shaping the future of quantum communications. We are seeking an exceptional Senior or Principal Scientist to join the Quantum Information group within the Quantum Technologies Department. This is an opportunity to contribute to research with national impact at the frontier of quantum photonic and quantum-secured technologies to build the nextgeneration quantum networks.

Our group advances the science and metrology underpinning cuttingedge quantum technologies, developing worldleading test and evaluation capabilities that support both industry and academia. You will be joining us at a transformative moment as we build a quantum network testbed, an initiative delivered in collaboration with leading UK and international partners.

In this permanent role, you will help define the scientific vision and technical roadmap for quantum networking, shaping both the research direction and the broader impact of NPL’s quantum network testbed. You will work closely with colleagues across NPL as well as global research and industrial stakeholders.

    Key Responsibilities (dependent on experience)

    • Lead strategic direction and cuttingedge research across quantum networks, including their design, operation and testing.

    • Identify pathways to commercial impact and cultivate a strong network of customers, collaborators, and industrial partners.

    • Work with the science leadership team to shape NPL’s longterm vision for the scientific and commercial impact of the quantum network testbed.

    • Lead and develop highperforming, multidisciplinary teams.

    • Establish and sustain collaborations with internal groups and external partners.

    • Raise NPL’s visibility through publications, conferences, and external representation.

    • Lead successful bids aligned with NPL’s and national strategic growth priorities.

    • Champion inclusive, collaborative working practices.

    • Represent NPL externally and promote our quantum capabilities.

  • About You

  • You will thrive in this role if you bring deep technical expertise, leadership capability, and a passion for pushing the boundaries of quantum science and engineering.

    Essential

    • Demonstrated experience and leadership in quantum photonic technologies.

    • PhD (or equivalent experience) in experimental physics, engineering or hardware development.

    • Postdoctoral experience in a relevant field.

    • Track record of leading and building multidisciplinary teams.

    • Rigorous, analytical problemsolving skills.

    • Curiosity and a collaborative mindset.

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    Desirable

    • Leadership and publication record in a relevant scientific area.

    • Experience with quantum network hardware or quantum memories.

    • Experience in commercial or industrial environments.

    • Experience collaborating with industry, academia or NMIs.

    • Evidence of translating innovation into industrial impact.

    • Track record of securing competitive funding.

    • Experience leading multidisciplinary research.

We actively recruit citizens of all backgrounds, but the nature of our work in specific departments means that nationality, residency and security requirements can be more tightly defined than others. You will be asked about this throughout the recruitment process. To work at NPL, you will need to obtain BPSS security clearance.

Please note:  Applications will be reviewed, and interviews conducted throughout the duration of this advert therefore we may at any time bring the closing date forward.  We encourage all interested applicants to apply as soon as practical.
