  • About the Role

  • The Department of Data Science and AI is looking for a researcher to contribute to our work on a wide variety of projects across all national challenges including life science and health, and climate and environmental sciences 

    Excitingly, this role offers scope to develop new collaborations across NPL, government, industry, and academia. You’ll enjoy developing, applying and sharing knowledge and skills with colleagues, collaborators, and the wider scientific community.  

    We work in a hybrid way, with a mix of remote and office working.   • About You

  • As Data Scientist, you will be covering mathematical modelling and its application to the development of statistical inference, machine learning, and AI estimation methods. 

    Essential experience: 

    • Advanced knowledge in at least one area of mathematical modelling (e.g., stochastic processes, differential geometry, topology) and associated estimation methods. 
    • Eagerness to learn about different types of models. 
    • Experience in mathematical modelling and/or data analysis. 
    • Interest in theoretical guarantees for estimation methods as well as their applications. 
    • A PhD in a relevant subject or significant relevant working experience, such as Mathematics, Statistics and/or other degree with a strong statistical analysis background.   
    • Experience in coding in Python and/or MATLAB, and an eagerness to work with an imperative programming language. 
    • Confidence in report writing and literature review. 
    • Experience and eagerness of working in a cross-disciplinary environment. 
    • Problem solving. 

     

    Desirable experience: 

    • Experience in any relevant area of environmental and climate science, and health. 
    • An understanding/keenness to learn of uncertainty quantification in complicated systems. 
    • Experience in object-oriented programming, and continuous integration / continuous development software development framework including unit testing. 
    • Experience of any area of assurance testing. 

    This role will be based in Teddington, but we can also accommodate staff in our Cambridge location .
